The lanyard becomes bi-directional when placed in the clip. The lanyard clip holds the cordage firmly enough that it doesn't payout unintentionally. If the lanyard gets pulled aggressively downward the cordage will slip from the two clip jaws. This is a benefit if the lanyard becomes entangled on foliage while moving rapidly or swinging between branches.
