The Icicle Down Jacket has been a flagship model in the Mont range for years. Used on expeditions to some of the most extreme conditions on earth it has been tried, tested and proven again and again. The Icicle Jacket is the first choice for adventures in the backcountry, high altitude trekking, mountaineering or winter camping.
A key feature of the Icicle Jacket is its Hydronaute XT shell, a highly water resistant and extremely breathable fabric that protects the down (and you) from exterior moisture while actively removing internal moisture (perspiration); stay dryer, warmer and more comfortable inside and out. The Hydronaute XT used on the Icicle Jacket has a waterhead of 20,000mm and a breathability rating of 20,000g/24hours.
Inside the Hydronaute XT shell is 310g (MD) of water resistant DWR 800+ loft down, DWR treated down stays dryer and lofts higher for longer in damp conditions.
The hood on the Icicle Jacket has a high collar, down filled draft tube on the facing and a drawcord for maximum protection in severe conditions. The hood also has a discreet zip around the back of the collar for complete removal if not required.
Other key features include down filled hand warmer pockets on the waist, reinforcement on the elbows and shoulders, articulated sleeves and a water resistant YKK Aquaguard® Vislon® zipper.
Using advanced monolithic PU membrane technology, Hydronaute XT™ fabric is completely waterproof, totally windproof & highly breathable. Guaranteed to maintain greater warmth & comfort than coated fabrics, Hydronaute XT is the best protection for down sleeping bags & clothing in cold to extreme conditions.
This product is filled with Premium White Down with a loft rating of at least 850 cubic inches per ounce.
Mont's down is selected for it's high quality, purity and the fact that it is not live plucked.
All Mont Sleeping Bags are sewn with hydrophobic Epic Thread. The silicon impregnated in this thread prevents moisture wicking along seams and into the bag, keeping down dryer and warmer.
Comfort in the Extreme: Using advanced monolithic PU membrane technology, Hydronaute XT fabric is completely waterproof, totally windproof & highly breathable. Guaranteed to maintain greater warmth & comfort than coated fabrics, Hydronaute XT is the best protection for down sleeping bags & clothing in cold to extreme conditions.
Waterproof to 20,000mm: Keeping down dry is vital for optimal performance; wet down just won't keep you warm. Waterproof Hydronaute XT fabric provides exceptional moisture protection for down clothing & sleeping bags.
Highly Breathable 20,000g/m2/24hrs: If not removed promptly, water vapour from your body will gather on down & reduce its ability to trap warmth. Hydronaute XT fabric expels 20L of water vapour per square metre per 24 hours for drier down, greater loft & maximum warmth.
Warmth Sealed In: With a 100% windproof rating, even Arctic blasts will not penetrate Hydronaute XT fabric, keeping warm air trapped inside.
Highly recommended for hanging out on Norwegian fjords in the middle of winter waiting to see if the northern lights will show up. Yes, I looked like the Michelin man, but I was a toasty warm Michelin man. This jacket took everything thrown at it with ease. Minus 20 degrees? Tick. Gale force winds and horizontal sleet? Double tick. Roomy pockets with space to store gloves, beanies and various bits of camera gear? Sorted. Buy the red one and you’ll never get lost in the snow.
Brilliant jacket, warmest I have ever had pleasure of owning plus it's waterproof. Perfect expedition/adventure jacket.
Hi Paul, Thanks for your review. While the Hydronaute XT fabric used in the icicle is in its own right water proof the jacket itself is not as it is not seam sealed. Hydronaute XT is the best down proof fabric as it is highly breathable, durable and when used on the icicle jacket extremely water resistance. I hope this helps to clarify things. If you have any questions please don,t hesitate to ask. Kind regards James
What a fantastic Jacket! provided all the comfort and protection I needed at for a night at Gorak Shep January 2020. Temperature was -25C, with wind chill that took it down to -30C. The jacket made dealing with the cold a breeze. I used the Icicle only as a camp/halt jacket, as even in the normal early morning temperatures at lower altitude of -15 to -20C it was to warm to start walking in. The only criticism I would have is the zipper size does not permit glove use beyond base layer. Apart from that looking forward to my next cold weather adventure.
The Mont Icicle Jacket undoubtedly my favourite piece of gear. From ski touring trips in the Australian Backcountry, to mountaineering in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and walking around the streets of Switzerland in winter, this jacket has never failed to keep me warm.
The level of quality the jacket is built to is unreal. Other company are not building down gear this durable anymore. Lighter is not always better, I'm more than happy to add like 50g for a jacket outer fabric that will last years, not like 2 summit attempts then need to patched everywhere and fixed up. Not only is this jacket cheeper than some others, but I trust it more than everything else I tried on and looked at. Get this and you will not be disappointed. I got a large, I normally were a medium, and there is lots of room for layers under this. Only been down to -10c so far with no other layers, did not even feel a slight chill. Good investment!
I have used this jacket on two trips to East Greenland. East Greenland isn't the warmest of places to visit, even in summer. Nights are cold and often windy so a good windproof down jacket is a necessity. Mont's Icicle is just the ticket, light to wear, warm, snug and windproof. Once I put it on the cold wasn't a consideration any more. Just like a sleeping bag with arms :-)
My Icicle jacket has kept me toasty warm on ski touring trips in the Australian High Country, skiing and travelling around Japan and bushwalking in the Flinders Ranges and Tasmania. The Hydronaute fabric ensures the down stays dry and the jacket is amazingly light and compact for it's warmth. The Icicle is without a doubt the warmest jacket I own.
I bought four of these Icicle jackets for my family as we were going on a trip to Finland in January 2014. During our trip we encountered temperatures ranging from -8C to -45C with most days between -20C and -35C. These jackets were the best purchase we have ever made. Even the local tour guides were impressed with how well we were equipped for their winter. They are lightweight but are so toasty warm there wasn't much need for too many layers underneath. Thanks Mont!
Best Winter puffy since my last Mont Icicle jacket (made in 1998 and still plenty warm enough for most trips) Wanted a hooded coat for this years Winter trip and loved the fully baffled design. Just spent 4 days in the Mt Speculation Mt Buggery area. Toasty warm even standing outside in strong wind at sub zero temps. Outer fabric very good at keeping the down dry - Love it
My Mont Icicle down jacket has been my best friend in Antarctica for the last 12 years. Working from a sailing yacht in extreme conditions, one has to prioritise absolutely everything down to the ultimate best equipment for the job, and that’s exactly why I have been so happy with my Icicle jacket. It’s provided ultimate warmth and durability and its water repellent qualities are excellent and necessary for life aboard sailing yachts in Antarctica. Cath Hew www.spiritofsydney.net
