We left from Guthega Power Station in wild, snowy weather carting a makeshift sled, piled with firewood, made by Hilly the day before from an old boogie board, a dissected pool noodle and rope.

With an overnight forecast of -10ºC, maybe colder, we wanted to take some wood to use in the fireplace at Horsecamp Hut – like good little hikers we left all the unused wood for future hut users/emergencies.
For a slapped-together first prototype, the “Boogie Mobile” as it was affectionately named, worked incredibly well. Taking it in turns, we managed to comfortably tow it all the way to the hut.

There was only one other guy at the hut who enjoyed the fire with us. We managed to get the inside temp up to 15 degrees while the outside temperature we expect was closer to -10ºC.

We used Moondance 2FN and Dragonfly tents with Kiandra and Telemark sleeping bags to sleep outside the hut.
It dumped snow all night with pretty strong winds, but in the morning we woke to blue skies and barely a breeze.

I had brought my Mont Helium 680 with me. A luxurious bag rated to -12°C for warm sleepers, it is perfectly suited to Tasmania’s cooler months. Ice crusted the ground and tent the next morning and checking my temperature sensor I was surprised to see that the temperature had dropped to -7.7°C overnight. That is remarkably cool for late October in Tassie!

Tasmania has had a burst of late snowfalls recently and I headed up into the mountains yesterday to take advantage of a patch of fine weather. Unfortunately, the snow has coincided with very windy weather which makes conditions in the mountains challenging (but invigorating) for photography.
