There is always another time...

Yesterday I set out on my first overnight walk in 3 months. I had surgery for a ruptured rotator cuff tendon in early March and it had finally healed to the point where I could carry a pack. I chose a destination that I had visited previously in the mountains of southern Lake St Clair- Cradle Mt NP.

I walked easily up to Shadow Lake then around Forgotten Lake before heading up towards Little Hugel in light drizzle. Halfway up Little Hugel there is a boulderfield of large dolerite boulders.
I had left home later than planned and as a result it was late afternoon as I tackled the boulders.
The rocks were wet and slippery and after clambering halfway up in the failing light I decided that the last thing I wanted was to risk the freshly healed tendon by falling.

Time to retreat.

I dropped back down, descending carefully down the boulderfield then equally carefully down the root strewn waterlogged track in the dim alpine cloudforest until I reached a perfect campsite beside Shadow Lake. Casting an eye upwards to check for poorly positioned branches, I placed my Moondance 1 in a flat, clear spot and settled in for the night.

Probably the most important thing to pack though is a good amount of respect for the environment, commonsense and experience
