After a busy two months, we decided to head up to the Main Range to get away for a few nights. Sadly the forecast put a dampener on our multi-day plans, so instead, we settled for an overnight camp perched on the ridge above the Sentinel where we knew we would get sunset and sunrise views.

Despite it only being a short trip there were many laughs, good food, a hike to the Sentinel, swimming in an alpine creek and endless views in spectacular weather before the forecast rain rolled in the next day.

March in Mongolia is late winter and my destination was a lake in northern Mongolia called Lake Khovsgol. This lake stretches north 135kms from the village of Khatgal to within 25kms of the Russian border. In the savage Mongolian winter, where temperatures can drop below -50°C, the surface of the whole lake freezes to a depth of approximately 1.1 metres.
