Fagus Time!

Written by Geoff Murray

Once again, it’s time for the leaves of the Tasmanian Deciduous Beech (Nothofagus Gunnii) to turn into a blaze of colour as Autumn approaches.

This is often a time of crisp nights and calm days with the warm Autumn light washing across the golden wilderness landscape.

This time I chose the Cradle Mountain area to explore the “turning of the Fagus”.

I had 3 days to explore and photograph the crags and gullies around me, quietly wandering alone searching for images that defined the wilderness of Tasmania in Autumn. This is probably the very best time of year to be in the mountains in Tassie.

The weather was kind to me and my timing was perfect as the golden leaves were close to their peak colour before dropping to carpet the ground so it was a joy to record the transition from the rich green of summer to the golden glow of autumn.

The nights only dropped to just on zero degrees so myHelium 450 was entirely suitable along with myHypermid tent to keep the night dew off me.

Definitely a highlight of the year :)
