Hiking Hannels Spur, Kosciuszko National Park

By Mont Team Member Matthew Clark

Earlier this month over the Easter long weekend I headed back to rediscover my love for a familiar country, the Ngarigo high country.

With good weather forecast and a wonderful full moon, I thought it was high time I returned to the beautiful hills of Kosciuszko National Park.

 It has seemingly been too long between visits. As the early morning fog cleared driving down the Monaro Highway, I was thinking about the trip, it was perhaps my first time back all year. As first light broke over the day, the full moon was setting a beautiful blood red on the horizon, a good sign of clear weather ahead!

Location: Hannels Spur Track, Kosciuszko National Park
Elevation gain: 2200m
Length: 34km - Return
Time: 8hr - Round trip

The destination was the famed Hannels Spur, the goal was to see how quick I could hike it in a single push. I've hiked the track many times over the past few years. Mainly thanks to the great work of some very dedicated volunteers and parks staff to keep it maintained! It's a great hike, whether enjoyed as a day hike or a multi-day trip.

I enjoyed a great day out, bettering my previous time by a good margin. I also had the pleasure of sharing the track with a trail runner up from Victoria. It seems the track is getting a name for itself! The songs of lyerbirds echoed through the hills on the way back to the car, in time for a late lunch. Satisfaction certainly filled the air.

Gear List

My gear of choice always includes the usual staples;
My La Sportiva Ultra Raptors
Mont Grid Pro Hoody (my favourite bit of Mont kit)
Mont Reactor Long Sleeve Shirt
Salomon Advanced Skin 12 vest
Snacks (I've been loving Tailwind lately)
First Aid Kit+ PLB, and some other essentials.

The pines were extensively studied some time ago and the conclusion was that they are up to 1,600 years old and quite possibly far older as the original pines may be long gone and the descendants may even date back to the Last Glacial Maximum about 20,000 years ago.
