Multi-Day Hiking in Main Range, Kosciuszko National Park

With Snowy Mountains Backcountry

Winter is on the way and Easter is always an exciting time with high levels of anticipation about the season ahead. It’s also my favourite time to hike with preseason frosts and clear bright blue azure skies but in the mountains, you need to be prepared for all conditions at all times.

If you’re looking at getting into multi-day walks but unsure about just what's involved Snowy Mountains Backcountry is now running multi-day walks on the Main Range offering 2 and 4 day walks. Sponsored by Mont Adventure Equipment, walkers will be able to enjoy the comfort and protection of Mont sleeping bags, packs and tents.

What to expect...

The Main Range Passage Walk is a 4-day thru-hike traversing the highest part of the Australian Alps from Guthega through to Dead Horse Gap near Thredbo. Unlike a walk through the lower treed elevations staying in huts, this is an expedition-style journey into the wild alpine above the tree line where views are vast and remote.

These walks are a great way to learn about how to multi-day hike and a lesson in systems thinking and packing. The SMBC guides will free you of overburdened gear ensuring you have only what you need. A full gear shakedown is undertaken at SMBC HQ in Guthega where you’ll be prepared for your adventure and familiarised with equipment usage.

Gear selection underpins a successful journey every time and Mont gear has seen me through plenty of rough patches over the years and brought me home safely many times! These adventures will give you a chance to real-time test the gear before buying.

The Tasmanian Pencil Pine

The pines were extensively studied some time ago and the conclusion was that they are up to 1,600 years old and quite possibly far older as the original pines may be long gone and the descendants may even date back to the Last Glacial Maximum about 20,000 years ago.
