What if I could only own one tent?

What if I could only own one tent?

Monts Backcountry ski specialist,Chris Smart, asks himself; What if I could only own one tent?

You know how when your planning a trip and you'r not quite sure what to take?
You check the weather, consider worst case scenarios, and how much fresh food you can do without. But, there are the usual items that most of us take to maintain a passion to do it again.

The luxury of owning multiples of similar items is not uncommon, but more than ever , I believe we should learn to live with less.

So what if I could only own one tent, which would it be?

Enter the Moondance 1FN

Despite the privilege of being able to field test the full Mont range of amazing tents, I keep using this tent-year round.

Alongside Valentines River I’ve creatively attached the footprint for extra shade.
Bike packing Tantangara Trails I’ve left the inner at home and used the fly with the footprint. Guiding up from Guthega, I’ve used trekking poles for rock solid pitching during last Decembers snow event.  Balmy, buggy nights out towards Jagungal, I enjoyed the fresh air without its fly.
The Moondance 1 is incredibly quick and easy to pitch, under 1.5 kg, 25000 mm+ water-head rated tub floor, internal storage, spacious vestibule, etc. etc.!

What about Snow-camping in the Moondance?

Not really meant for it, but with a little know how, below tree line snow camping is always an option.

Can the Moondance 1 fit 2 people?

I haven’t and won’t try it. Why risk chaos when I can revel in solo organised bliss... they can get their own.

If you’re really torn between the mesh vs full nylon inner…. you can buy both! This is cheaper and less resources than 2 separate tents, as they then share the fly and footprint. Gives great flexibility for varied conditions. I have this for the Moondance 2 and it’s been working a treat. FN for Tassie winters and mesh for buggy warm summer trips.

Still tossing up between the Moondance 1 and the 1FN. For bikepacking size and weight are important, and the differences are negligible. I don’t want to over-consume and buy multiple tents. Do you really need full nylon if remaining below the tree line even in sub-zero temperatures? Any difference in condensation between the two models?

I used MONT Moondance 1FN for my solo AAWT in 2022. Quick to setup & packup. It was faultless, spacious & I felt secure in bad weather. It was my home for 42 days straight & has been on numerous adventures since & still looks perfect.

Yes agree Chris. The FN1 moondance just seems to keep coming along! Tassie, Snowy Mtns and Outback. In the backpack or on the adventure bike. A good compromise of low weight, sufficient room and weather tightness.

I’ve used this tent for two – me and my son – with exped mummy style mats arranged top and tail. Worked a treat.

Out there, everything is quiet. All the noise, the missed training sessions, the work drama, the forgotten birthdays and the never-ending to-do list - it feels like it doesn’t matter. You’re left with the cool air, beautiful humans beside you, and a glimpse of another world.

It became my safe place. My home. Every time I slide into my sleeping bag, that memory comes back. Not just the physical comfort, but the emotional one. The sense of safety, self-reliance, and joy that only comes when you strip life back to the essentials and find they’re more than enough.

The Miena Cider Gum is under significant threat of extinction, clearly shown by the fact that the majority of trees in this particular patch are dead. Climate change is a massive contributor to the threat to this species. These trees have adapted to a cold, wet environment, normally growing on the edge of frost hollows and they cannot tolerate drought stress.
