Greater Glider Research - Tree Climbing to Research Arboreal Mammals

Greater Glider Research - Tree Climbing to Research Arboreal Mammals

October 27, 2021 2 min read

“Today I got a call about a greater glider, in a small patch of habitat that was due to be cleared that day. It had run out of a tree that had just been cut down, and zoomed up a nearby tree into a shallow hollow. I dropped everything, headed over, zipped up the tree, and caught her. We then relocated her 300m away to the Illawarra escarpment, in a lovely patch of eucalyptus that had plenty of hollows - last picture is her inside a new den...”

PPE Lifespan - Is it time to break up with your gear?

October 27, 2021 3 min read

For professional users of height safety equipment, PPE Lifespan can seem like a bit of a minefield. The added complexity of Legislation, Standards, Codes of Practice, and individual Company Policies and Site Rules is a lot to consider when using your height safety PPE.

Bushwalkers Weather Alert! By Geoff Murray

October 20, 2021 2 min read

I had planned to walk into one of my favourite areas again, the Walls of Jerusalem but on the morning that I intended to head in, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a Bushwalker’s Weather Alert. This didn’t match with what my preferred forecast program Windy said and I have found that program to generally be very accurate. So I started the climb up towards Trappers Hut with a sense of curiosity to see what the day would bring.

Choosing a New Tent. By Ben Wilkinson

Choosing a New Tent. By Ben Wilkinson

October 14, 2021 2 min read

Choosing a new tent is one of those moments that calls for serious research. It's a big decision, and a potentially risky one, if you get it wrong you may have to live with the consequences for a long time. I live in Tasmania and love exploring wilderness Alpine regions, especially winter camping.

So, my non-negotiables in a tent are it being waterproof, that's #1, then weight and space. Ok, looks play a part, but they are a bonus :)

An Explosion of Colour and Life. By Leann Geach

October 13, 2021 1 min read

“We are so lucky to live in the bush capital. Getting out in nature is good for the soul and the mind. Especially when greeted with an explosion of colour and life around every corner. Yesterday I spotted or heard 23 bird species, frogs loud and proud, kangaroos with little heads poking from pouches, ants repairing holes...”

I first visited Iceland in 2012 on my way to East Greenland. My time in Iceland on this first trip included driving around the Ring Road, the road that circumnavigates this incredible country. Since then I have been privileged to fly into Reykjavik’s airport, Keflavik, a further 5 times.

Sea Kayak to Enterprise Island, Antarctica. By Geoff Murray

Sea Kayak to Enterprise Island, Antarctica. By Geoff Murray

September 30, 2021 3 min read

...Over the next two and a bit weeks our group of seven paddlers made our way down the peninsula, sometimes camping onshore on the ice, at other times sleeping on the yacht that roughly shadowed our progress.

We had a mixture of weather, from superb sunny calm days to rain, snow and violent katabatic winds. On one day in particular, when we were unable to get a forecast by radio from the yacht, we spent our time paddling into increasingly nasty conditions. Culminating in surfing large waves across a 4 km wide fjord with 40-knot blasts of katabatic wind hitting us from behind while trying very hard not to hit the car-sized blocks of ice floating at water level all around us...

What makes a Trail Running Shoe and which should I choose? By Leann Geach

September 29, 2021 3 min read

“A road running shoe doesn't have a difficult job to do. It just has to protect your foot from the repetitive impact from a hard, flat surface. But when it comes to running off-road, the demands on a shoe are far more complex and finding the correct shoe is essential for comfort, protection, traction and stability.”

Leann, the Mont Shop manager and trail running shoe expert, takes us through the particulars of choosing the right shoe, with a focus on La Sportiva, thought leaders in trail shoe design and manufacture.
